Water is the most underrated science teacher in your kitchen. It’s cheap, it’s safe, it’s everywhere — and it hides some genuinely surprising physics and chemistry inside it. You don’t need a lab coat or expensive equipment to explore these ideas. A few glasses, some everyday household items, and ten minutes of curiosity are enough.

Here are seven water experiments that are simple to set up, safe for students of almost any age (with basic adult supervision for the younger ones), and genuinely fun to watch unfold.

1. The Density Tower (Rainbow in a Glass)

What you need: Honey, dish soap, water, vegetable oil, rubbing alcohol, food coloring, a tall clear glass.

What to do: Pour honey first, then dish soap, then colored water, then oil, and finally colored rubbing alcohol — each poured slowly down the side of the glass, one layer at a time.

What happens: Instead of mixing, the liquids stack into distinct colored bands, like a rainbow trapped in glass.

The science: Every liquid has a different density — essentially, how tightly its molecules are packed. Denser liquids sink below lighter ones, so honey (the densest) settles at the bottom while alcohol (the lightest) floats on top. This is the same principle that explains why oil floats on water in a puddle, and why hot air balloons rise through cooler, denser air.

2. Walking Water

What you need: Three clear cups, water, food coloring (red, yellow, blue), paper towels.

What to do: Arrange the cups in a row — fill the first and third with colored water, leave the middle one empty. Fold paper towels into strips and place one end in a full cup, the other end in the empty cup, connecting all three cups in a chain.

What happens: Over a few hours, the colored water “climbs” up the paper towel and travels into the empty cup, and where two colors meet, they blend into a new one.

The science: This is capillary action — the same force that lets tree roots pull water up toward the leaves. Paper towels are made of tiny fibers with even tinier gaps between them. Water molecules are attracted to these fibers (adhesion) and to each other (cohesion), so the water gets pulled upward against gravity, one fiber-gap at a time.

3. The Unspillable Water Glass

What you need: A glass filled to the very brim with water, an index card or a piece of stiff cardboard.

What to do: Place the card flat over the mouth of the glass, press gently, then hold it in place while you flip the whole thing upside down over a sink (just in case). Slowly let go of the card.

What happens: The card stays stuck to the glass, and the water doesn’t fall out.

The science: This is atmospheric pressure in action. Air is pushing on everything around us all the time — about 14.7 pounds per square inch at sea level, which is more than enough to hold up the card and the water inside it. Since there’s no air trapped inside the glass to push back on the card from above, the upward push of the atmosphere below wins the battle against gravity.

4. The Floating and Sinking Egg

What you need: Two glasses of water, salt, a raw egg.

What to do: Gently lower the egg into a glass of plain tap water — it sinks. In a second glass, stir in several tablespoons of salt until it dissolves, then lower the egg in.

What happens: The egg floats in the salty water but sinks in the plain water.

The science: Adding salt to water increases its density without changing its volume much — you’re packing more mass into the same space. Once the salt water becomes denser than the egg itself, the egg floats, just as swimmers find it easier to float in the ocean than in a freshwater lake. This is also exactly why the Dead Sea, one of the saltiest bodies of water on Earth, makes it almost impossible for a person to sink.

5. Instant Rain in a Jar

What you need: A clear glass jar, hot water, ice cubes, a small plate, food coloring (optional).

What to do: Fill the jar about a third full with hot water, then place a plate with ice cubes on top of the jar as a lid.

What happens: Within a couple of minutes, water droplets form on the underside of the plate and begin to “rain” down into the jar.

The science: This is a miniature version of Earth’s water cycle. The hot water evaporates, turning into water vapor that rises. When that vapor hits the cold plate above, it cools rapidly and condenses back into liquid droplets — the same process that forms clouds when warm, moist air rises and meets cooler air higher in the atmosphere, eventually falling back down as rain.

6. The Balloon That Won’t Pop Over a Flame

What you need: Two balloons, water, a candle or lighter (adult supervision required).

What to do: Blow up one balloon with just air and hold it briefly over a flame — it pops almost instantly. Fill a second balloon partly with water before inflating it, then hold that one over the same flame.

What happens: The water-filled balloon doesn’t pop, even though the flame is touching it directly.

The science: Water has an unusually high heat capacity — it can absorb a large amount of heat energy without a big rise in temperature. When the flame touches the balloon, the water inside absorbs the heat almost as fast as it arrives, keeping the rubber right at that spot cool enough that it never reaches its melting point. Without water, the air-filled balloon has nothing to soak up the heat, so the rubber weakens and bursts almost immediately.

7. Cartesian Diver (The Water Bottle Submarine)

What you need: A clear plastic bottle filled with water, a small packet from soy sauce or a small glass dropper, all sealed inside the bottle.

What to do: Fill the bottle almost to the top with water, drop in the packet (it should float, just barely), seal the cap tightly, and then squeeze the sides of the bottle.

What happens: As you squeeze, the little diver sinks. Release your grip, and it floats back up.

The science: This experiment is a hands-on demonstration of Pascal’s Law and buoyancy. Inside the packet or dropper is a small pocket of trapped air. Squeezing the bottle increases the water pressure, which compresses that trapped air pocket, making the diver slightly denser than the surrounding water — so it sinks. Releasing the pressure lets the air pocket expand again, making the diver buoyant enough to rise. It’s the exact same principle that real submarines use, just with ballast tanks instead of a soy sauce packet.

Why These Experiments Matter

None of these experiments need a laboratory — just a curious mind and a kitchen counter. What makes them worth doing isn’t just the “wow” moment, but what they quietly teach: density, pressure, capillary action, heat capacity, and the water cycle are not abstract textbook terms once you’ve watched them happen in a glass in front of you.

The best science education often starts exactly like this — with a simple question like “what happens if I try this?” — and water, in all its ordinary, everyday familiarity, turns out to be one of the richest subjects to ask that question about.

Try one this weekend, and see which surprises you the most.

(Walking Water)

Introduction

Getting a good job today takes more than just a degree. Employers now look for skills that help students get jobs — practical abilities that show you can think, communicate, and adapt in the real world. According to the World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025, nearly 39% of core job skills will change by 2030, and most employers say the skills gap is their biggest hiring challenge.

The good news? These skills don’t need an expensive course. They can be built through daily practice, small projects, and the right mindset. In this blog, we break down the 10 most important employability skills for students in 2026 — and simple ways to start building each one today.

1. AI Fluency

Knowing how to use AI tools well is now one of the fastest-growing skills students need for jobs. It’s not about knowing every tool — it’s about using AI to work faster, checking its answers carefully, and knowing when not to rely on it.

How to build this skill: Practice using AI tools for one regular task, like summarizing notes or drafting an assignment, and learn to spot when the output needs fixing.

2. Data Literacy

You don’t need to be a data scientist to read a spreadsheet and explain what it means. Employers value students who can look at numbers and turn them into simple, useful insights — a core part of digital skills for career growth.

How to build this skill: Start with Excel or Google Sheets. Learn basic formulas and charts, then practice writing one-line takeaways from any data you find.

3. Analytical and Critical Thinking

Analytical thinking has topped the World Economic Forum’s core skills list for years. It means breaking a big problem into smaller, manageable parts instead of guessing your way through it — one of the most tested job-ready skills in interviews.

How to build this skill: Practice solving case studies or real business problems step-by-step before checking how experts solved them.

4. Communication Skills

Clear writing and speaking often matter more than technical knowledge. Poor communication is one of the top reasons candidates lose out, even when they’re skilled — making this one of the most essential soft skills for students.

How to build this skill: Practice writing short, clear updates. Post on LinkedIn regularly to get comfortable expressing ideas in fewer words.

5. Basic Cybersecurity Awareness

As more work moves online, employers expect students to understand digital safety basics — spotting phishing emails, using strong passwords, and protecting sensitive data. This is part of the growing demand for tech skills for jobs.

How to build this skill: Take a free beginner course on cybersecurity basics from platforms like Google or Coursera.

6. Adaptability and Resilience

Plans change fast in every workplace. Employers want students who can handle setbacks calmly and adjust quickly — a skill that’s rising sharply in importance, according to WEF data on future-ready skills for students.

How to build this skill: After something doesn’t go as planned, write down what you did next. This becomes valuable material for interview answers.

7. Emotional Intelligence and Teamwork

Many group projects fail not from lack of knowledge, but from poor communication and ego clashes. Employers notice who listens, resolves conflict calmly, and lifts the whole team — a key part of workplace skills for students.

How to build this skill: Pay attention to how conflicts are handled in group work, and practice addressing tension calmly instead of avoiding it.

8. Creative Problem-Solving

Creative thinking is rising just as fast as analytical thinking on employer skill lists. Companies want students who can suggest fresh ideas and also test whether those ideas actually work — a valuable 21st-century skill for students.

How to build this skill: Practice generating multiple solutions to small problems before picking the best one.

9. Personal Branding and Networking

Many internships and entry-level jobs go to candidates who were noticed before they even applied. A simple, consistent presence on LinkedIn — sharing projects and learnings — is one of the most underrated career skills for students.

How to build this skill: Post about real projects or things you’re learning, and reach out to professionals with specific, genuine questions.

10. Continuous Learning and Self-Management

The skills gap keeps growing because most people stop learning after getting a job title. Students who build a habit of learning something new regularly stay relevant much longer — a core part of lifelong learning skills for career success.

How to build this skill: Set aside time each week to learn something small and unscheduled. Practice managing your own deadlines on personal projects.

Conclusion

You don’t need to master all ten skills that help students get jobs overnight. Pick two or three that feel weakest, build them through real projects over the next few months, and be ready to talk about them with real examples in interviews. That’s what actually gets you hired in 2026 — not one more line on a resume, but proof that you can think, adapt, and grow.

FAQs

Q1. What are the most important skills that help students get jobs in 2026? AI fluency, data literacy, analytical thinking, communication, and adaptability are among the most in-demand skills employers look for in 2026, according to the World Economic Forum.

Q2. Can students learn job-ready skills without a certification? Yes. Most employability skills — like communication, critical thinking, and adaptability — are built through real practice, projects, and daily habits rather than formal certification.

Q3. Why are soft skills as important as technical skills for students? Employers say technical tools change quickly, but soft skills like teamwork, communication, and resilience determine whether someone can actually apply their knowledge effectively at work.

Introduction

Whenever we gaze up at the night sky, one faint reddish point of light almost always catches our attention. It isn’t an ordinary star — it’s our neighboring planet, Mars. For centuries, humans have looked at this planet with curiosity and fascination. In ancient times it was named after the god of war, and in today’s scientific age, it is being seriously considered as humanity’s next possible home. In this blog, let’s explore Mars in detail — its structure, history, exploration, and future possibilities.

Introduction to Mars and Its Position

Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun and sits right next to Earth. It is one of the four inner rocky planets of the solar system (Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars). Its diameter is about 6,779 kilometers, roughly half the diameter of Earth. Mars has only about 10.7 percent of Earth’s mass, which means its gravity is also much weaker — about 38 percent of Earth’s gravity.

Mars orbits the Sun at an average distance of about 228 million kilometers, and it takes roughly 687 Earth days to complete one orbit. Interestingly, a day on Mars (called a “sol”) is very close to a day on Earth — about 24 hours and 37 minutes. This similarity has made it much easier for scientists to study Martian weather patterns and seasonal cycles.

The Mystery Behind the Red Color

Why is Mars called the “Red Planet”? The answer lies in the soil on its surface. Mars’ surface contains large amounts of iron oxide — essentially rust. Just as iron rusts when exposed to water and air, the iron-rich dust on Mars has oxidized over billions of years, giving it a reddish-brown color. This dust covers the entire planet’s surface, which is why Mars appears red when viewed from space.

Mars’ Atmosphere and Climate

Mars’ atmosphere is extremely thin compared to Earth’s — only about 1 percent as dense. It consists mainly of carbon dioxide (about 95 percent), along with small amounts of nitrogen and argon. Because the atmosphere is so thin, Mars experiences extreme temperature swings. Daytime temperatures can reach around 20°C, while nighttime temperatures can plummet to as low as -140°C.

Dust storms are another distinctive feature of Mars. These storms can sometimes grow so large that they engulf the entire planet and last for months. In 2018, one such global dust storm permanently disabled NASA’s Opportunity rover, as the lack of sunlight prevented its solar panels from recharging.

The Discovery of Water: A Major Breakthrough

One of the most exciting discoveries in Mars research is the evidence of water. Scientists have found dried-up river valleys, ancient lakebeds, and delta-like formations on the Martian surface, indicating that liquid water once flowed there billions of years ago.

Today, water exists on Mars mainly as ice at the polar ice caps, largely a mixture of carbon dioxide ice and water ice. Additionally, some scientific studies have suggested the possible presence of liquid saltwater lakes beneath the Martian surface. This discovery is significant because wherever water exists, the possibility of life increases.

Did Life Ever Exist on Mars?

This is a question that has intrigued both scientists and the general public for years. No mission has yet found direct evidence of life on Mars, but certain clues offer hope. Organic molecules — the building blocks of life — have been found in Martian rocks. Additionally, seasonal fluctuations in methane gas have also been recorded, which could originate either from geological processes or possibly from microbial activity.

NASA’s Perseverance rover is currently exploring these very possibilities in Jezero Crater, a site that once held an ancient lake and river delta. The rover is collecting rock samples that will eventually be brought back to Earth for detailed analysis in the future.

Mars’ Two Moons: Phobos and Deimos

Mars has two small natural satellites — Phobos and Deimos. Both are tiny and irregularly shaped, leading scientists to believe they were likely asteroids from the asteroid belt that were captured by Mars’ gravity. Phobos orbits so close to Mars that scientists predict it will either crash into the planet or break apart into a ring within the next few million years.

The History of Mars Exploration

Humans have sent numerous missions to study Mars over the decades. In 1965, NASA’s Mariner 4 spacecraft captured the first close-up images of Mars. This was followed by the Viking missions, Mars Pathfinder, the Spirit and Opportunity rovers, the Curiosity rover, and now the Perseverance rover along with the Ingenuity helicopter — all of which have played crucial roles in uncovering the mysteries of Mars.

India has also made its mark in this field. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) launched the Mars Orbiter Mission, known as Mangalyaan, in 2013, and India became the first country to successfully reach Mars orbit on its very first attempt. This achievement was remarkable not just technically but also economically, as the mission was completed on an extraordinarily low budget.

The Future: Will Humans Settle on Mars?

Today, Mars is no longer just a subject of scientific curiosity — it has become a potential direction for the future of human civilization. Private companies like SpaceX are working on the ambitious goal of establishing a human colony on Mars. The reasoning behind this is that humanity should become a “multi-planetary species,” ensuring the survival of civilization in case of a major natural or human-made catastrophe on Earth.

However, settling on Mars is far from easy. Challenges such as its thin atmosphere, harmful radiation, extreme cold, and limited availability of water and oxygen stand as major obstacles for scientists. To address these challenges, scientists are also considering concepts like “terraforming” — gradually transforming Mars’ environment to resemble Earth’s — though this remains a distant and largely theoretical idea for now.

Conclusion

Mars, once part of ancient civilizations’ mythologies, has today become one of the most exciting fields of scientific and technological study. Its red soil hides a rich history, traces of once-flowing water, and future possibilities of human settlement — all of these aspects make it the most fascinating planet in our solar system. As our technology continues to advance, the layers of mystery surrounding Mars continue to unfold. Perhaps in the coming decades, we will witness humans taking their first steps on the soil of this red planet — a moment that will be etched into human history forever.

A tiny, dry seed — lifeless as it may look — carries an entire story of life waiting to unfold. Bury it in the soil, and within days it breaks through the earth, unfurls green leaves, and slowly transforms into a full-grown plant. This process feels so ordinary that we rarely stop to notice the science behind it. Let’s take a closer look at germination — what it takes, how it happens step by step, and a few fascinating facts along the way.

What Exactly Is Germination?

Germination is the process by which a dormant seed “wakes up” and begins developing into a new plant. In simple terms, it’s the seed’s journey from sleep to life. Every seed already contains a tiny embryo inside it, waiting for the right conditions to become active and start growing.

The Four Conditions Every Seed Needs

Not every seed sprouts on its own — a few specific conditions have to come together first.

1. Water (Moisture) A seed’s outer coat is typically hard and dry. Once it absorbs water, this coat softens and the seed begins soaking up moisture — a process called imbibition. Water activates enzymes inside the seed that begin breaking down stored food and delivering it to the embryo.

2. The Right Temperature Every plant species has an ideal temperature range for germination — neither too cold nor too hot. Most seeds germinate best between 20°C and 30°C (68°F–86°F). Too cold, and enzyme activity slows down; too hot, and the seed can dry out and die before it even gets a chance to sprout.

3. Oxygen During germination, the seed’s respiration rate increases sharply, which means it needs a steady oxygen supply. This is exactly why seeds shouldn’t be planted too deep or left submerged in water — a lack of oxygen can cause them to rot instead of sprout.

4. Suitable Soil and Space Interestingly, light isn’t essential for every seed to germinate — some actually sprout better in darkness. But loose, well-aerated, nutrient-rich soil plays a huge role in helping the roots spread and establish themselves.

The Stages of Germination — Step by Step

Stage 1: Water Absorption The seed begins absorbing moisture from the soil. This causes it to swell, and the outer seed coat starts to crack open.

Stage 2: Enzymes Activate Once water enters, enzymes stored inside the seed spring into action. They convert stored food (like starch) into simple sugars, giving the embryo the energy it needs to grow.

Stage 3: The Root Emerges (Radicle Emergence) The first structure to break through is a tiny root-like part called the radicle. It grows downward, anchoring the seed and searching the soil for water and nutrients.

Stage 4: The Shoot Pushes Upward (Plumule Emergence) Next, a shoot called the plumule emerges and grows toward the soil surface. This eventually develops into the plant’s stem and leaves.

Stage 5: Photosynthesis Begins Once the seedling breaks through the soil and reaches sunlight, its leaves turn green as chlorophyll develops, and the plant starts making its own food. From this point on, it no longer depends on the food stored in the seed — it becomes fully self-sufficient.

Two Types of Germination

In botany, germination is broadly classified into two types:

Epigeal Germination: The cotyledons (seed leaves) are pushed above the soil surface. Example: beans, pumpkin.

Hypogeal Germination: The cotyledons stay below the soil, and only the shoot emerges above ground. Example: peas, maize, chickpeas.

Try This Simple Experiment at Home

This makes for a great hands-on science activity, especially for kids:

Place a damp cotton ball or tissue paper in a clear glass jar.

Add a few seeds — chickpeas or kidney beans work well.

Keep the jar in a sunny spot and lightly moisten the cotton every day.

Within 2–3 days, you’ll see roots appear, followed by a shoot.

It’s a simple way to make the invisible visible — turning germination from a textbook concept into something kids can watch happen with their own eyes.

Why Understanding This Matters

Germination isn’t just a biological process — it’s the foundation of the entire food chain and ecosystem. Farmers rely on this knowledge to decide which crops to sow in which season, how deep to plant the seeds, and how much irrigation they’ll need. This understanding is fundamental to both successful farming and food security.

Conclusion

The entire process hidden inside a small seed is one of nature’s most elegant and precisely orchestrated events. Water, temperature, oxygen, and the right soil — when these four elements come together, they bring a seemingly lifeless seed to life. So the next time you see a plant pushing its way up through the soil, remember — it’s not just a plant. It’s science, quietly telling its story.

Did you know? The oldest seed ever successfully germinated was nearly 2,000 years old. Scientists in Israel grew a date palm from an ancient seed found at Masada — the resulting tree was fittingly named “Methuselah.”

“Yeh Dil Maange More” — these four words, radioed down from a frozen cliff-face in 1999, capture the spirit of a war fought not with numbers or machines, but with raw human courage. This 26th July, as India observes another Kargil Vijay Diwas, we tell the story of that war — peak by peak, soldier by soldier.

Prologue: A Betrayal at 18,000 Feet

In the winter of 1998–99, while India and Pakistan were publicly engaging in peace talks — the Lahore Declaration had just been signed in February 1999 — Pakistani soldiers, disguised as militants, were quietly crossing the Line of Control (LoC) in Kargil. Under a plan believed to have been engineered by General Pervez Musharraf, they occupied over 130 abandoned high-altitude posts that the Indian Army traditionally vacated each winter due to extreme weather, and reoccupied every spring.

This year, someone got there first.

By the time local shepherds near Batalik stumbled upon armed men on the peaks in early May 1999 and alerted the Indian Army, the intruders had already dug in — with bunkers, supply routes, and a commanding view of National Highway 1A, the single road connecting Srinagar to Leh. Cut this highway, and Ladakh would be strangled.

India had no choice. It had to take the mountains back — and take them back by climbing straight into enemy fire, because there was no other way up.

The War That Had to Be Climbed

What makes Kargil different from almost every other war in modern history is simple: the enemy owned the high ground, and the only way to dislodge them was to walk uphill into their guns.

Picture a soldier at 17,000 feet, carrying a rifle, ammunition, and rations, climbing a near-vertical rock face at night, in temperatures well below freezing, with barely enough oxygen to breathe — while an enemy bunker above rains down machine-gun fire and grenades. There was no cover. There was no shortcut. There was only the mountain and the will to take it.

This is the story of the men who did exactly that.

Tololing, overlooking Dras, was among the first major peaks to fall to the intruders — and its recapture in June 1999 became the psychological turning point of the war. The Indian Army’s 18 Grenadiers and 2 Rajputana Rifles fought a punishing multi-day battle here, often crawling metre by metre under fire. When Tololing finally fell back into Indian hands, it proved something crucial: the enemy could be dislodged, however dug in they were. It gave every soldier climbing the next peak the belief that victory was possible.

Tiger Hill — The Midnight Assault

Tiger Hill, a dominating peak near Dras, became the most iconic battle of the war. For days, Indian artillery — including the devastating Bofors guns — pounded the peak almost continuously, softening enemy positions. Then, on the night of 3rd–4th July 1999, soldiers of the 18 Grenadiers, supported by the Naga Regiment and the Indian Air Force’s Mirage 2000 strikes, began a near-vertical night assault.

Climbing in complete darkness, roped together in places, they scaled cliffs the enemy considered unclimbable — which is precisely why those approaches were lightly defended. By the morning of 4th–5th July, the Indian tricolour was flying over Tiger Hill. It was one of the most technically difficult infantry assaults India’s army had ever executed, and it broke the back of the enemy’s defensive line in the Dras sector.

Point 4875 — Where Vikram Batra Became Immortal

In the Mushkoh Valley stood Point 4875, a peak that would later be renamed “Batra Top” in honour of the man who died taking it.

Captain Vikram Batra of 13 JAK Rifles led his men up this peak on the night of 7th July 1999. As his company neared the top, they came under heavy fire from a bunker they hadn’t spotted. Batra didn’t wait for orders or reinforcements — he charged the bunker himself, throwing a grenade and eliminating it, opening the path for his men to take the peak.

It was here, on his radio set, that Batra uttered the words that would become legend: “Yeh Dil Maange More” — this heart wants more — a line borrowed from a popular advertisement of the time, now forever tied to his memory.

Tragically, his story didn’t end in triumph. Days later, on 7th July, as his unit fought to secure another position, a young officer, Lieutenant Anuj Nayyar, was critically wounded. Batra rushed forward to pull him to safety under direct enemy fire. It was in this act of saving a fellow soldier that Captain Vikram Batra was fatally shot. He was 24 years old. He was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra, India’s highest gallantry award.

Batalik — The Longest, Hardest Fight

If Tiger Hill was the most famous battle, Batalik was the most gruelling. The terrain here was even steeper and more treacherous, and the fighting stretched on longer than almost anywhere else in the war.

It was in Batalik that Captain Manoj Kumar Pandey of 1/11 Gorkha Rifles led his men to capture a series of enemy positions — Jubar Top, Khalubar — over consecutive nights, often being the first to walk into enemy fire to draw it away from his men. On the night of 2nd–3rd July, while assaulting a well-defended bunker, he was hit twice but continued to lead the charge until the position was captured. He succumbed to his injuries during the assault. He was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra. He was 24 years old.

It was also in Batalik that Rifleman Sanjay Kumar of 13 JAK Rifles wrote his own chapter of courage. During an assault on a ridge, he was the first to charge an enemy machine-gun position, taking two bullets in the process. Despite his wounds, he seized the enemy’s own machine gun and turned it against them, killing several enemy soldiers and clearing the way for his company to advance. He survived — and was awarded the Param Vir Chakra for his actions.

Tiger Hill’s Teenage Hero

Perhaps no story from Kargil captures raw courage quite like that of Grenadier Yogendra Singh Yadav, who was just 19 years old during the war — the youngest recipient of the Param Vir Chakra in Kargil.

As part of the assault team scaling Tiger Hill, Yadav volunteered to lead the climb up a near-vertical, 1,000-foot cliff face to destroy enemy bunkers guarding the summit. Climbing first, he was hit by enemy fire — bullets tore through his shoulder and legs. He kept climbing. Reaching the top, and despite his wounds, he lobbed grenades into the first bunker, then engaged the second bunker in hand-to-hand combat, giving his company the opening they needed to storm the peak. He survived his injuries and lives on today as a decorated veteran, often speaking to young students about that night on the cliff.

The Cost of Victory

By the time Operation Vijay was declared successfully concluded on 26th July 1999, more than 500 Indian soldiers had laid down their lives, and many hundreds more were wounded — a reminder that every metre of those mountains was paid for in blood. Behind every Param Vir Chakra were hundreds of other soldiers whose names may not be as widely known, but whose courage was no less real: signalmen who kept communication lines running under fire, porters who carried ammunition up impossible slopes, medics who treated the wounded in the middle of firefights, and young officers who led charge after charge knowing the odds.

Why We Remember — Why 26th July Matters

26th July is the day the last intruder was pushed off Indian soil and Operation Vijay was declared complete. Since then, Kargil Vijay Diwas has stood as India’s annual reminder that freedom, sovereignty, and peace are never free — they are earned, and sometimes paid for at unimaginable cost.

At the Kargil War Memorial in Dras, engraved in stone, are words that capture the spirit of the war better than anything else could: “When you go home, tell them of us and say — for your tomorrow, we gave our today.”

Have you ever thought that your kitchen isn’t just a place to cook — it could also be a tiny science lab? Salt, baking soda, vinegar, lemon, milk, eggs — all these things we use every single day are secretly hiding a whole world of chemistry, physics, and biology inside them. In this blog, we’ve brought together several fun and easy experiments that you can try at home, either with your kids or just on your own. Along with each experiment, we’ve also explained why it happens, so you have fun while learning something new too.

Let’s dive into this fascinating journey.

1. Baking Soda Volcano

This is the most famous, classic kitchen experiment, and it’s still just as exciting today as it’s always been.

You’ll need:

2 teaspoons baking soda

Half a cup of vinegar

Red or orange food coloring (optional)

A little liquid dish soap

A small bottle or glass

How to do it: Put the baking soda into a bottle. Add the food coloring and a bit of dish soap to it. Now slowly pour in the vinegar and step back — a foamy fountain will erupt!

The science behind it: Baking soda is a base and vinegar is an acid. When the two combine, a chemical reaction takes place that produces carbon dioxide gas. This gas tries to escape rapidly in the form of bubbles, creating that explosive foamy eruption. The soap makes the foam thicker and longer-lasting.

2. The Floating and Sinking Egg

You’ll need:

One raw egg

Two glasses of water

Salt

How to do it: Fill one glass with plain water and drop the egg in — it will sink. In the second glass, dissolve 4-5 teaspoons of salt thoroughly into the water, then add the egg — this time it will float!

The science behind it: This is all about density. Adding salt makes the water denser than the egg, which is why the egg floats to the top. This is the same principle behind why it’s easier to float in the salty ocean — in the Dead Sea, people float effortlessly because its water is extremely salty.

3. Magic Milk Experiment

You’ll need:

Full-cream milk

A few drops of food coloring

Liquid dish soap

A cotton swab or your finger

How to do it: Pour milk into a plate to spread it out. Add drops of different food colors at various spots. Now dip a cotton swab into dish soap and touch it to the center of the milk — the colors will come alive, dancing and spreading out!

The science behind it: Milk contains fat and protein. When soap touches the milk, it starts breaking down the fat molecules and disrupts the surface tension. This causes the milk molecules to rush around rapidly, carrying the colors along with them — which is why the colors appear to dance.

4. Can a Lemon Really Make Electricity? (Lemon Battery)

You’ll need:

2-3 lemons

Galvanized (zinc) nails

Copper coins or copper wire

A small LED light

Connecting wires

How to do it: Insert one zinc nail and one copper wire into each lemon (making sure they don’t touch each other). Using wires, connect the copper wire of one lemon to the zinc nail of the next lemon, linking all the lemons in series. Finally, connect the two remaining loose ends to the LED — if wired correctly, the LED will light up faintly.

The science behind it: The citric acid in lemons acts as an electrolyte. When two different metals (zinc and copper) are dipped into this acid, a chemical reaction begins that causes a flow of electrons — in other words, electricity is generated. This is the same principle behind how modern batteries work.

5. The Bouncy Egg

You’ll need:

One raw egg

Vinegar

A glass jar

How to do it: Submerge the egg in a jar full of vinegar and let it sit for 24-48 hours, changing the vinegar occasionally. After a couple of days, the hard shell will completely dissolve, and the egg will turn soft, rubbery, and translucent. You can now gently bounce it a little (carefully, and never from a height!).

The science behind it: An eggshell is made of calcium carbonate. The acetic acid in vinegar reacts with this calcium carbonate, dissolving it and releasing carbon dioxide gas (you’ll see bubbles forming around the egg). Once the shell dissolves, the inner membrane remains — and since it’s flexible, the egg ends up feeling rubbery.

6. Inflating a Balloon With Vinegar and Baking Soda

You’ll need:

An empty plastic bottle

Vinegar

Baking soda

A balloon

How to do it: Pour a little vinegar into the bottle. Fill the balloon with baking soda. Now stretch the balloon’s opening tightly over the mouth of the bottle (making sure the soda doesn’t fall in yet). Then lift the balloon upright so all the soda drops into the bottle — the balloon will start inflating on its own.

The science behind it: The same acid-base reaction from the volcano experiment is at play here. Since the bottle is sealed, the carbon dioxide gas produced has nowhere to escape except into the balloon, causing it to inflate. It’s a great way to visualize gas pressure.

7. Rainbow in a Glass (Density Layers)

You’ll need:

Honey, milk, dish soap, lightly colored water, oil, colored rubbing alcohol

A tall, clear glass

How to do it: Pour the densest liquid (honey) into the glass first. Then, very slowly and carefully, pour the remaining liquids one by one along the side of the glass, in order of density (dish soap, milk, water, oil, and finally the colored alcohol on top). If poured carefully, each layer will remain distinct, forming a colorful tower.

The science behind it: Every liquid has a different density. Denser liquids always settle at the bottom while lighter ones float on top, since they don’t easily mix with each other (especially oil and water). This experiment brings the concept of density to life right before your eyes.

8. Invisible Ink (Secret Lemon Messages)

You’ll need:

Lemon juice

A cotton swab or thin brush

Plain paper

A candle or light bulb (for heat)

How to do it: Dip a cotton swab in lemon juice and write a message on paper. Once it dries, the message will be completely invisible. To read it, gently warm the paper near a bulb or low flame — the writing will emerge in a light brown color.

The science behind it: The carbon compounds in lemon juice soak into the paper’s fibers and remain colorless. But when exposed to heat, these compounds oxidize and turn brown — appearing before the rest of the paper does, because lemon juice has a lower burning point than the paper itself.

9. The Balloon That Won’t Burst Over a Flame

You’ll need:

2 balloons

Water

A candle/lighter

How to do it: (Only attempt this experiment under adult supervision) Fill one balloon with just air and bring it near a candle flame — it will pop instantly. Fill the second balloon with some water first, then air, and bring it near the flame — this balloon won’t burst (at least not immediately)!

The science behind it: Water has an incredible ability to absorb heat. When the flame touches the balloon, the water instantly absorbs that heat and keeps the rubber from getting hot enough to burst. This is a fantastic (though carefully-supervised) way to demonstrate water’s heat capacity.

10. Fruit Battery Tester — Which Fruit Is the Most “Powerful”?

Taking the lemon battery experiment further, try repeating it with potatoes, tomatoes, oranges, and apples, and if you have a multimeter, measure the voltage each one produces. This can also make for a great science fair project, where you note which fruits or vegetables have higher acid content and therefore generate the most electricity.

Important Safety Notes

Science experiments are fun, but a few precautions are essential:

Always do experiments involving fire, candles, or hot objects under adult supervision.

Never eat anything used in an experiment (like an egg soaked in vinegar).

Lay down old newspaper or cloth before starting, so cleanup is easy.

Food coloring and vinegar can stain clothes, so wear old clothing.

When doing experiments with young children, explain and guide them through each step — don’t rush.

Conclusion

You don’t need an expensive lab or heavy textbooks to learn science. The everyday items sitting in your kitchen — salt, vinegar, baking soda, lemon, milk — are quietly hiding a treasure trove of science. Through these experiments, kids will learn, and adults get a chance to relive that childhood curiosity too. So the next time you have a little free time in the kitchen, try “making science” along with making dinner!

If you try any of these experiments, do share your experience — which one did you enjoy the most?
