“ये दिल मांगे मोर” — 1999 में एक बर्फीली चट्टान से रेडियो पर कहे गए ये चार शब्द, उस जंग की भावना को समेटे हुए हैं जो संख्या या मशीनों से नहीं, बल्कि इंसानी हौसले से लड़ी गई थी। इस 26 जुलाई को, जब भारत एक और कारगिल विजय दिवस मना रहा है, हम उस युद्ध की कहानी सुनाते हैं — चोटी-दर-चोटी, सैनिक-दर-सैनिक।

प्रस्तावना: 18,000 फीट की ऊंचाई पर एक धोखा

1998–99 की सर्दियों में, जब भारत और पाकिस्तान सार्वजनिक रूप से शांति वार्ता कर रहे थे — फरवरी 1999 में लाहौर घोषणापत्र पर हस्ताक्षर हुए ही थे — पाकिस्तानी सैनिक, आतंकवादियों के भेष में, चुपचाप कारगिल में नियंत्रण रेखा (LoC) पार कर रहे थे। जनरल परवेज़ मुशर्रफ द्वारा रची गई मानी जाने वाली एक योजना के तहत, उन्होंने 130 से अधिक उन ऊंचाई वाली चौकियों पर कब्ज़ा कर लिया, जिन्हें भारतीय सेना हर सर्दी में कठोर मौसम के कारण खाली कर देती थी और हर वसंत में फिर से संभालती थी।

इस बार, कोई और वहां पहले पहुंच गया।

मई 1999 की शुरुआत में जब बटालिक के पास स्थानीय चरवाहों को चोटियों पर हथियारबंद लोग दिखे और उन्होंने भारतीय सेना को सूचित किया, तब तक घुसपैठिए पूरी तरह जम चुके थे — बंकरों, आपूर्ति मार्गों और श्रीनगर-लेह को जोड़ने वाले एकमात्र राष्ट्रीय राजमार्ग NH-1A पर सीधी नज़र के साथ। अगर यह राजमार्ग कट जाता, तो लद्दाख का दम घुट जाता।

भारत के पास कोई विकल्प नहीं था। उसे ये पहाड़ वापस लेने ही थे — और वो भी सीधे दुश्मन की गोलियों के बीच चढ़ाई करके, क्योंकि ऊपर जाने का और कोई रास्ता नहीं था।

वो जंग जिसे चढ़कर जीतना पड़ा

कारगिल को आधुनिक इतिहास के लगभग हर दूसरे युद्ध से अलग बनाने वाली बात बहुत सीधी है: दुश्मन के पास ऊंचाई थी, और उसे हटाने का एकमात्र तरीका था उनकी बंदूकों की सीध में ऊपर की ओर चढ़ना।

एक सैनिक की कल्पना कीजिए, 17,000 फीट की ऊंचाई पर, राइफल, गोला-बारूद और राशन लादे, रात के अंधेरे में लगभग खड़ी चट्टान पर चढ़ता हुआ, कड़ाके की ठंड में, जहां सांस लेने भर की ऑक्सीजन मुश्किल से मिलती है — और ऊपर से दुश्मन का बंकर मशीन-गन और ग्रेनेड की बौछार कर रहा है। न कोई आड़ थी, न कोई शॉर्टकट। बस पहाड़ था, और उसे जीतने का जज़्बा।

यह कहानी है उन जवानों की, जिन्होंने ठीक यही किया।

लड़ाई-दर-लड़ाई: वो चोटियाँ जिन्हें वापस जीतना पड़ा

टोलोलिंग — जंग का मोड़

द्रास को निगरानी में रखने वाला टोलोलिंग, घुसपैठियों के कब्ज़े में आने वाली पहली बड़ी चोटियों में से एक था — और जून 1999 में इसकी पुनः जीत इस युद्ध का मनोवैज्ञानिक मोड़ बनी। भारतीय सेना की 18 ग्रेनेडियर्स और 2 राजपूताना राइफल्स ने यहां कई दिनों तक बेहद कठिन लड़ाई लड़ी, अक्सर गोलियों के बीच मीटर-दर-मीटर रेंगते हुए। जब टोलोलिंग आखिरकार भारत के हाथों में वापस आया, तो इसने एक अहम बात साबित कर दी — दुश्मन चाहे कितना भी मज़बूती से जमा हो, उसे हटाया जा सकता है। इसने अगली चोटी पर चढ़ने वाले हर सैनिक को यह विश्वास दिया कि जीत मुमकिन है।

टाइगर हिल — आधी रात का हमला

द्रास के पास स्थित टाइगर हिल, इस युद्ध की सबसे प्रतिष्ठित लड़ाई बनी। कई दिनों तक भारतीय तोपखाने — जिसमें विनाशकारी बोफोर्स तोपें भी शामिल थीं — ने लगातार इस चोटी पर गोलाबारी करके दुश्मन की स्थिति को कमज़ोर किया। फिर, 3–4 जुलाई 1999 की रात, 18 ग्रेनेडियर्स के जवानों ने, नागा रेजिमेंट और भारतीय वायुसेना के मिराज 2000 विमानों के समर्थन से, एक लगभग खड़ी रात्रि चढ़ाई शुरू की।

पूरी तरह अंधेरे में, कुछ जगहों पर रस्सियों से बंधे हुए, उन्होंने उन चट्टानों पर चढ़ाई की जिन्हें दुश्मन नाकाबिल-ए-चढ़ाई मानता था — यही वजह थी कि उन रास्तों पर बहुत कम सुरक्षा थी। 4–5 जुलाई की सुबह तक, तिरंगा टाइगर हिल पर लहरा रहा था। यह भारतीय सेना द्वारा किए गए सबसे तकनीकी रूप से कठिन पैदल हमलों में से एक था, और इसने द्रास सेक्टर में दुश्मन की रक्षा पंक्ति की कमर तोड़ दी।

प्वाइंट 4875 — जहां विक्रम बत्रा अमर हो गए

मुश्कोह घाटी में प्वाइंट 4875 नाम की एक चोटी थी, जिसे बाद में उस जवान के सम्मान में “बत्रा टॉप” नाम दिया गया, जिसने इसे जीतते हुए अपनी जान दी।

13 जेएके राइफल्स के कैप्टन विक्रम बत्रा ने 7 जुलाई 1999 की रात अपने जवानों को लेकर इस चोटी पर चढ़ाई की। जैसे ही उनकी टुकड़ी शिखर के करीब पहुंची, एक अनदेखे बंकर से भारी गोलीबारी शुरू हो गई। बत्रा ने आदेश या मदद का इंतज़ार नहीं किया — उन्होंने खुद बंकर पर हमला किया, ग्रेनेड फेंककर उसे नष्ट किया, और अपने जवानों के लिए चोटी तक का रास्ता खोल दिया।

यहीं, अपने रेडियो सेट पर, बत्रा ने वो शब्द कहे जो किंवदंती बन गए: “ये दिल मांगे मोर” — उस दौर के एक मशहूर विज्ञापन से लिया गया यह वाक्य, अब हमेशा के लिए उनकी याद से जुड़ गया।

दुखद रूप से, उनकी कहानी जीत पर खत्म नहीं हुई। कुछ दिनों बाद, जब उनकी यूनिट एक और चौकी को सुरक्षित करने के लिए लड़ रही थी, एक युवा अधिकारी लेफ्टिनेंट अनुज नैयर गंभीर रूप से घायल हो गए। बत्रा सीधी गोलीबारी के बीच उन्हें बचाने के लिए आगे बढ़े। अपने साथी सैनिक को बचाने की इसी कोशिश में कैप्टन विक्रम बत्रा को गोली लगी और वे शहीद हो गए। वे मात्र 24 साल के थे। उन्हें मरणोपरांत भारत के सर्वोच्च वीरता पुरस्कार परम वीर चक्र से सम्मानित किया गया।

बटालिक — सबसे लंबी, सबसे कठिन लड़ाई

अगर टाइगर हिल सबसे मशहूर लड़ाई थी, तो बटालिक सबसे कठिन। यहां का इलाका और भी खड़ा और खतरनाक था, और लड़ाई युद्ध के लगभग किसी भी और हिस्से से ज्यादा लंबी खिंची।

बटालिक में ही 1/11 गोरखा राइफल्स के कैप्टन मनोज कुमार पांडे ने लगातार कई रातों तक अपने जवानों को लेकर जुबार टॉप, खालूबार जैसी कई दुश्मन चौकियों पर कब्ज़ा किया, अक्सर सबसे पहले गोलियों की ज़द में जाकर अपने जवानों को बचाते हुए। 2–3 जुलाई की रात, एक मज़बूत बंकर पर हमले के दौरान, वे दो बार गोली लगने के बावजूद हमले का नेतृत्व करते रहे, जब तक चौकी पर कब्ज़ा नहीं हो गया। हमले के दौरान ही उन्होंने अपने घावों से दम तोड़ दिया। उन्हें मरणोपरांत परम वीर चक्र से सम्मानित किया गया। वे भी मात्र 24 साल के थे।

बटालिक में ही 13 जेएके राइफल्स के राइफलमैन संजय कुमार ने भी बहादुरी का अपना अध्याय लिखा। एक पहाड़ी पर हमले के दौरान, वे सबसे पहले दुश्मन की मशीन-गन चौकी पर हमला करने वाले थे, इस दौरान उन्हें दो गोलियां लगीं। घायल होने के बावजूद, उन्होंने दुश्मन की ही मशीन-गन छीन ली और उसी से दुश्मन पर हमला कर दिया, कई दुश्मन सैनिकों को मार गिराया और अपनी कंपनी के आगे बढ़ने का रास्ता साफ किया। वे बच गए — और उनकी इस बहादुरी के लिए उन्हें परम वीर चक्र से सम्मानित किया गया।

टाइगर हिल का सबसे युवा नायक

शायद कारगिल की किसी कहानी में इतनी कच्ची बहादुरी नहीं दिखती जितनी ग्रेनेडियर योगेंद्र सिंह यादव की कहानी में — जो युद्ध के समय मात्र 19 साल के थे, और कारगिल में परम वीर चक्र पाने वाले सबसे युवा सैनिक थे।

टाइगर हिल पर चढ़ाई करने वाली टुकड़ी के हिस्से के रूप में, यादव ने शिखर की रखवाली कर रहे दुश्मन बंकरों को नष्ट करने के लिए एक लगभग खड़ी, 1,000 फीट ऊंची चट्टान पर सबसे पहले चढ़ने की ज़िम्मेदारी खुद ली। सबसे पहले चढ़ते हुए, उन्हें दुश्मन की गोलियां लगीं — कंधे और पैरों में गोलियां घुस गईं। फिर भी वे चढ़ते रहे। शिखर तक पहुंचकर, अपने घावों के बावजूद, उन्होंने पहले बंकर में ग्रेनेड फेंके, फिर दूसरे बंकर से हाथों-हाथ भिड़ गए, जिससे उनकी कंपनी को चोटी पर धावा बोलने का मौका मिला। वे अपने घावों से उबर गए और आज एक सम्मानित पूर्व सैनिक के रूप में जीवित हैं, अक्सर युवा छात्रों से उस रात की कहानी साझा करते हैं।

जीत की कीमत

जब 26 जुलाई 1999 को ऑपरेशन विजय की सफल समाप्ति की घोषणा हुई, तब तक 500 से ज़्यादा भारतीय सैनिक अपनी जान गंवा चुके थे, और सैकड़ों और घायल हुए थे — यह याद दिलाता है कि उन पहाड़ों का हर एक मीटर खून से चुकाया गया था। हर परम वीर चक्र के पीछे सैकड़ों और सैनिक थे जिनके नाम शायद उतने जाने-पहचाने न हों, लेकिन जिनकी बहादुरी कम नहीं थी — सिग्नलमैन जिन्होंने गोलीबारी के बीच संचार व्यवस्था चालू रखी, पोर्टर जिन्होंने असंभव ढलानों पर गोला-बारूद ढोया, चिकित्सक जिन्होंने गोलीबारी के बीच घायलों का इलाज किया, और युवा अधिकारी जिन्होंने खतरों को जानते हुए भी बार-बार हमले का नेतृत्व किया।

हम क्यों याद करते हैं — 26 जुलाई का महत्व

26 जुलाई वो दिन है जब आखिरी घुसपैठिए को भारतीय ज़मीन से खदेड़ दिया गया और ऑपरेशन विजय की समाप्ति की घोषणा हुई। तब से, कारगिल विजय दिवस भारत की हर साल यह याद दिलाने वाली परंपरा बन गया है कि आज़ादी, संप्रभुता और शांति कभी मुफ्त नहीं मिलती — इन्हें कमाया जाता है, और कभी-कभी असीम कीमत चुकाकर।

द्रास स्थित कारगिल युद्ध स्मारक पर पत्थर पर खुदे ये शब्द, इस युद्ध की भावना को शायद सबसे बेहतर तरीके से बयां करते हैं: “जब तुम घर जाओ, तो उन्हें हमारे बारे में बताना और कहना — तुम्हारे कल के लिए, हमने अपना आज दे दिया।”

Kargil Vijay Diwas: The Untold Stories of Courage That Won Back the Peaks

“Yeh Dil Maange More” — these four words, radioed down from a frozen cliff-face in 1999, capture the spirit of a war fought not with numbers or machines, but with raw human courage. This 26th July, as India observes another Kargil Vijay Diwas, we tell the story of that war — peak by peak, soldier by soldier.

Prologue: A Betrayal at 18,000 Feet

In the winter of 1998–99, while India and Pakistan were publicly engaging in peace talks — the Lahore Declaration had just been signed in February 1999 — Pakistani soldiers, disguised as militants, were quietly crossing the Line of Control (LoC) in Kargil. Under a plan believed to have been engineered by General Pervez Musharraf, they occupied over 130 abandoned high-altitude posts that the Indian Army traditionally vacated each winter due to extreme weather, and reoccupied every spring.

This year, someone got there first.

By the time local shepherds near Batalik stumbled upon armed men on the peaks in early May 1999 and alerted the Indian Army, the intruders had already dug in — with bunkers, supply routes, and a commanding view of National Highway 1A, the single road connecting Srinagar to Leh. Cut this highway, and Ladakh would be strangled.

India had no choice. It had to take the mountains back — and take them back by climbing straight into enemy fire, because there was no other way up.

The War That Had to Be Climbed

What makes Kargil different from almost every other war in modern history is simple: the enemy owned the high ground, and the only way to dislodge them was to walk uphill into their guns.

Picture a soldier at 17,000 feet, carrying a rifle, ammunition, and rations, climbing a near-vertical rock face at night, in temperatures well below freezing, with barely enough oxygen to breathe — while an enemy bunker above rains down machine-gun fire and grenades. There was no cover. There was no shortcut. There was only the mountain and the will to take it.

This is the story of the men who did exactly that.

Battle by Battle: The Peaks That Had to Be Won Back

Tololing — The Turning Point

Tololing, overlooking Dras, was among the first major peaks to fall to the intruders — and its recapture in June 1999 became the psychological turning point of the war. The Indian Army’s 18 Grenadiers and 2 Rajputana Rifles fought a punishing multi-day battle here, often crawling metre by metre under fire. When Tololing finally fell back into Indian hands, it proved something crucial: the enemy could be dislodged, however dug in they were. It gave every soldier climbing the next peak the belief that victory was possible.

Tiger Hill — The Midnight Assault

Tiger Hill, a dominating peak near Dras, became the most iconic battle of the war. For days, Indian artillery — including the devastating Bofors guns — pounded the peak almost continuously, softening enemy positions. Then, on the night of 3rd–4th July 1999, soldiers of the 18 Grenadiers, supported by the Naga Regiment and the Indian Air Force’s Mirage 2000 strikes, began a near-vertical night assault.

Climbing in complete darkness, roped together in places, they scaled cliffs the enemy considered unclimbable — which is precisely why those approaches were lightly defended. By the morning of 4th–5th July, the Indian tricolour was flying over Tiger Hill. It was one of the most technically difficult infantry assaults India’s army had ever executed, and it broke the back of the enemy’s defensive line in the Dras sector.

Point 4875 — Where Vikram Batra Became Immortal

In the Mushkoh Valley stood Point 4875, a peak that would later be renamed “Batra Top” in honour of the man who died taking it.

Captain Vikram Batra of 13 JAK Rifles led his men up this peak on the night of 7th July 1999. As his company neared the top, they came under heavy fire from a bunker they hadn’t spotted. Batra didn’t wait for orders or reinforcements — he charged the bunker himself, throwing a grenade and eliminating it, opening the path for his men to take the peak.

It was here, on his radio set, that Batra uttered the words that would become legend: “Yeh Dil Maange More” — this heart wants more — a line borrowed from a popular advertisement of the time, now forever tied to his memory.

Tragically, his story didn’t end in triumph. Days later, on 7th July, as his unit fought to secure another position, a young officer, Lieutenant Anuj Nayyar, was critically wounded. Batra rushed forward to pull him to safety under direct enemy fire. It was in this act of saving a fellow soldier that Captain Vikram Batra was fatally shot. He was 24 years old. He was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra, India’s highest gallantry award.

Batalik — The Longest, Hardest Fight

If Tiger Hill was the most famous battle, Batalik was the most gruelling. The terrain here was even steeper and more treacherous, and the fighting stretched on longer than almost anywhere else in the war.

It was in Batalik that Captain Manoj Kumar Pandey of 1/11 Gorkha Rifles led his men to capture a series of enemy positions — Jubar Top, Khalubar — over consecutive nights, often being the first to walk into enemy fire to draw it away from his men. On the night of 2nd–3rd July, while assaulting a well-defended bunker, he was hit twice but continued to lead the charge until the position was captured. He succumbed to his injuries during the assault. He was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra. He was 24 years old.

It was also in Batalik that Rifleman Sanjay Kumar of 13 JAK Rifles wrote his own chapter of courage. During an assault on a ridge, he was the first to charge an enemy machine-gun position, taking two bullets in the process. Despite his wounds, he seized the enemy’s own machine gun and turned it against them, killing several enemy soldiers and clearing the way for his company to advance. He survived — and was awarded the Param Vir Chakra for his actions.

Tiger Hill’s Teenage Hero

Perhaps no story from Kargil captures raw courage quite like that of Grenadier Yogendra Singh Yadav, who was just 19 years old during the war — the youngest recipient of the Param Vir Chakra in Kargil.

As part of the assault team scaling Tiger Hill, Yadav volunteered to lead the climb up a near-vertical, 1,000-foot cliff face to destroy enemy bunkers guarding the summit. Climbing first, he was hit by enemy fire — bullets tore through his shoulder and legs. He kept climbing. Reaching the top, and despite his wounds, he lobbed grenades into the first bunker, then engaged the second bunker in hand-to-hand combat, giving his company the opening they needed to storm the peak. He survived his injuries and lives on today as a decorated veteran, often speaking to young students about that night on the cliff.

The Cost of Victory

By the time Operation Vijay was declared successfully concluded on 26th July 1999, more than 500 Indian soldiers had laid down their lives, and many hundreds more were wounded — a reminder that every metre of those mountains was paid for in blood. Behind every Param Vir Chakra were hundreds of other soldiers whose names may not be as widely known, but whose courage was no less real: signalmen who kept communication lines running under fire, porters who carried ammunition up impossible slopes, medics who treated the wounded in the middle of firefights, and young officers who led charge after charge knowing the odds.

Why We Remember — Why 26th July Matters

26th July is the day the last intruder was pushed off Indian soil and Operation Vijay was declared complete. Since then, Kargil Vijay Diwas has stood as India’s annual reminder that freedom, sovereignty, and peace are never free — they are earned, and sometimes paid for at unimaginable cost.

At the Kargil War Memorial in Dras, engraved in stone, are words that capture the spirit of the war better than anything else could: “When you go home, tell them of us and say — for your tomorrow, we gave our today.”
